Week 4: for on are as back sack black snack
December 1st we will be on week 3. Please practice at home.
Also, new to our ELA program is our totes. In them, each child has two leveled reading books, their sight words and spelling/reading words. The children go to them when they complete their seat work and during rest time.
Math
The k-kids continue to build their number sense and 1st graders are continuing to gain a deep understanding of addition and subtraction. Together, we are measuring, collecting data and telling time.
Science
We are comparing different seeds, diagramming and sorting items. We are also, exploring the cycle of seeds to fruit.
Social Studies
We are celebrating Thanksgiving and learning about Native American, Pilgrims and the location of tribes in the US.
In English Language Arts we are exploring literature, concepts of print, sight-words, writing our letters (and numbers) adjectives, nouns, verbs and phonemic awareness. At home, continue reading daily with your child. They may "shout-out" a sight-word that they recognize. Encourage them to!!
Also, in phonemic awareness we have been segmenting compound words. You can do this at home or in the car by saying a compound word. Then, the child repeats the word and then segment, it into two words. Ex. P: inside S:inside, in...side. Please make sure that there is a complete pause between the two parts or two words. In addition, try some blending by saying two words with a pause between them. Child repeats the two words with a pause, and then says the compound word. Ex. P: fire...man S: fire...man; fireman.
In Math we have been collecting data and graphing our findings, practicing writing numbers, gaining an understanding of the value each number has, counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, describing/naming shapes and recognizing patterns. We are also gaining an understanding of place value- two digits. First graders have been adding and subtracting.
In Science we have exploring color, seasonal change, water conservation (guest presenter) and our senses.
In Social Studies we have come together as learners, learned the rules and routines of our leaning environment, and explored with Christoper Columbus. We have sailed the ocean blue and learned about the compass rose, and compasses and directions (North, South, East and West). Your child will have an opportunity to wear the class compass in school and tell us the directions we are traveling through the halls. Traveling Trunks (artifacts from the Historical Society) will be coming to us throughout the school year. A museum that comes to us!!!!
Please read daily with your child, talk about the book and illustrations, AND review with your child the work that comes home each day.
